Hi:

Is anyone using NIS to distribute a common smbpasswd table
to several UNIX/samba servers?

I have two Samba servers, each acting as PDC of its own
domain. One is set up as an NIS master and the other an
NIS slave. They are successfully using the same /etc/passwd
table.

I know machine accounts in smbpasswd cannot be shared across
domains. But would it be possible to define a basic table
on each Samba PDC that listed only the machine accounts, and
then access the NIS smbpasswd table for users?

Seems to me this would work, since Samba happily uses an NIS
passwd table. BUT - could you change your smbpasswd on the
server that was an NIS slave? Can the binary smbpasswd
handle this?

Or can you only change your smbpasswd on the NIS master OR
if the smbpasswd table is local to the machine and is not
an NIS copy?

Thanks for any insights you can offer...I'd experiment with htis
but classes are in session.

Lisa
