Thanks to all who responded -- it appears that gnu's make doesn't work (at
least in my environment) with the CVS code.  I'd appreciate if anybody can
verify this.  I did *excactly* the same thing with gnu make and sun's
version (to the point of rm'ing the whole directory each time and
reloading a full CVS distribution), and gmake bombed and make didn't.
Seems odd, but....
