The Samba 2.2 instructions/web page titled: "security = domain in Samba 2.x" section "Joining an NT Domain with Samba 2.2" does not work with my NT4 PDC. I just wasted two days tracking down the procedure which does work. A little bit of documentation would have saved me a lot of grief. Perhaps the above document could be changed? Also the document DOMAIN_MEMBER.html should be changed to match. What finally worked for me was this: (1) delete the samba server from the NT4 PDC's list of servers, (2) reboot the NT4 PDC, (3) add the samba server back to the NT4 PDC using the server manager, (4) run: smbpasswd -j -r Note: in step 4 above *do not* use -U to assign a username or password. This procedure, with emphasis on step (4) should definitely be listed as a procedure to try when the problem is failure to authenticate using an NT4 PDC. I eventually figured this out from smbpasswd(8). Perhaps this is a bug since one would think that running: smbpasswd -j -r -UAdministrator%password would accomplish the same thing, but in my case at least it doesn't. This does work, its just that there was a big/little endien bug in Samba 2.2 at the time of the release. The other method is inheriently insecure, as the password is set to a known value until the machine changes it during the join. From bgardner at transzap.com Thu Apr 11 23:58:41 2002 From: bgardner at transzap.com (Bill Gardner) Date: Fri Feb 13 23:41:27 2004 Subject: Security = domain Documentation Message-ID: In order to clear up some problems with the documentation it would be good if the following changes were made to the section of the documentation relating to having a Samba 2.x server joining an NT domain. Replace the first section in the existing document with the second section: ============================================================================ ========================= Assume you have a Samba 2.x server with a NetBIOS name of SERV1 and are joining an NT domain called DOM, which has a PDC with a NetBIOS name of DOMPDC and two backup domain controllers with NetBIOS names DOMBDC1 and DOMBDC2 . In order to join the domain, first stop all Samba daemons and run the command: root# smbpasswd -j DOM -r DOMPDC -UAdministrator%password as we are joining the domain DOM and the PDC for that domain (the only machine that has write access to the domain SAM database) is DOMPDC. The Administrator%password is the login name and password for an account which has the necessary privilege to add machines to the domain. If this is successful you will see the message: smbpasswd: Joined domain DOM. in your terminal window. See the smbpasswd(8) man page for more details. ============================================================================ ========================= Assume you want the Samba 2.x server with a NetBIOS name of SERV1 to join the domain DOM. There are three cases to consider: 1. Pure NT4.0 Network: NT4.0 PDC (NT40PDC) and one or more NT4.0 BDC's (NT40BDC01, NT40BDC02) 2. Mixed Mode NT5.0 Network: Domain controller in mixed mode (NT50DC) and one or more NT4.0 BDC's (NT40BDC01, NT40BDC02) 3. Pure NT5.0 Native Mode Network: One or more NT5.0 Domain Controllers all in native mode (NT50DC01, NT50DC02) In order to join the domain DOM, first stop all Samba daemons on SERV1. Then create a computer record for SERV1 on the correct domain controller: 1. Pure NT4.0 Network: On the PDC (NT40PDC) use the administrative tool Server Manager to create a new computer record for SERV1. 2. Mixed Mode NT5.0 Network: On the NT5.0 DC (NT50DC) use the administrative tool Active Directory Users and Computers to create a new computer record for SERV1. Make sure to check the box: [x] Allow pre-Windows 2000 computers to use this account. 3. Pure NT5.0 Native Mode Network: On any of the NT5.0 DC's (NT50DC01, NT50DC02) use the administrative tool Active Directory Users and Computers to create a new computer record for SERV1. Make sure to check the box: [x] Allow pre-Windows 2000 computers to use this account. Now that you have created a computer record for SERV1, you will want SERV1 to join the domain. On SERV1 execute one of following commands: 1. Pure NT4.0 Network: root# smbpasswd -j DOM -r NT40PDC 2.Mixed Mode NT5.0 Network: root# smbpasswd -j DOM -r NT50DC 3.Pure NT5.0 Mative Mode Network: root# smbpasswd -j DOM -r NT50DC01 When joining the domain DOM in Case 1 only the PDC for that domain, NT40PDC, has write access to the domain's SAM database. In Case 2 you want to use the NT5.0 DC, NT50DC and in Case 3 you can use either DC, NT50DC01 or NT50DC02. If this is successful you will see the message (the x's denote the date and time): xxxx/xx/xx xx:xx:xx : change_trust_account_password: Changed password for domain DOMAIN. Joined domain DOMAIN. in your terminal window. See the smbpasswd(8) man page for more details. ============================================================================ ============================ From sean.janeiro at mgxgroup.com Mon Apr 15 13:01:28 2002 From: sean.janeiro at mgxgroup.com (sean janeiro) Date: Fri Feb 13 23:41:28 2004 Subject: Help Message-ID: I'd like to install Samba on Solaris8 ( sparc ), please help with procedures and installing Swat as well. Samba went in easy. But when trying to update swat, the instructions say to compile etc. I don't see source, but I find under source/script a swatinstall.sh script. Ok try it. Doesn't work. Look at scripts oh it requires parameters... lets see..... Ok it needs this. Doesn't anybody document anything any more????? Or maybe check and modify the documentation when making changes??? (So far swat STILL doesn't work) I even looked for an email address to contact someone re the distro files without resorting to a mailing list --- you guessed it nada, at least not that I found in 15 minutes or so of looking. I was trying to get swat to install as a co-worker wanted to try Linux, but doesn't feel comfortable with the command line. Oh well guess he can use 2000 :-( I am no super expert, but consider my self reasonably competent. I have compiled new kernels and have done a lot with my system. I even had swat running in an earlier version. I apologize again for venting, but I needed to let someone know.... thanx fred From jerry at samba.org Wed Apr 17 17:59:09 2002 From: jerry at samba.org (Gerald Carter) Date: Fri Feb 13 23:41:28 2004 Subject: Swat problems In-Reply-To: <3.0.1.32.20020417133902.026cdea0@helios.hampshire.edu> Message-ID: On Wed, 17 Apr 2002, Fred W. My direct email is listing in the front page of the Samba-HOWTO-COllection.pdf file include with Samba 2.2.3a (in the docs/ directory). > I was trying to get swat to install as a co-worker wanted to try Linux, > but doesn't feel comfortable with the command line. Then you simply follow the instructions in the man page for editing /etc/inetd.conf (or xinetd if you use that). Perhaps it would be better for you to use a binary package from you OS vendor (e.g. RPM or *.deb)?
