[Samba] nmbd-daemon fails on startup without error

I got bitten by something similar, and it turned out to be related to SELinux restricting nmbd but not smbd.

Check your SELinux config file for the "SELINIX=" parameter (/etc/selinux/config on RHEL).  If it's "enforcing", that could well be your problem.  If your host is reasonably otherwise protected, try setting to "permissive" and see if that helps.  If it does, start doing your research on how to exclude nmbd from being denied by SELinux, and set the config parameter back to "enforcing".

I have a probably the same problem. I use Fedora 10 and the command 
 
service nmb status 
 
gives 
 
nmbd is dead but pid file exists (or something similar) 
 
Looking at the date of the pid file I noticed that it was a leftover  from the last shutdown. So, probably something is going wrong 
when stopping the nmb service at shutdown, but when I start or stop  manually it goes always fine. No special messages in the logfiles. 
 
any suggestions to further diagnose the problem?
