smbpasswd -j boxyzzy.doodah.edu -r boxy2k3a -u administrator  - Failed 
with the exact same messages.

You could try it with -u administrator: 
 
smbpasswd -j boxyzzy.doodah.edu -r boxy2k3a -u administrator
