Thanks to all that answered.

I guess I'm out of luck on this one, since this is HP CIFS Server, and 
2.2.12 (A.01.11.03) is the most recent version for HP-UX 11.00 
(compiling is not an option, though I wish it were).

So I'll do that when it's upgraded to 11.11. At least I won't waste my 
time trying :-)
