How about doing it the right way ;-)

Configure an internal DNS server, and use the DHCP server to 
configure the clients to use it.
Configure the DHCP and DNS server to do dynamic DNS updates.

When a client connects to your network and gets a lease, it's 
hostname (by default the NetBIOS machine name for a Windoze box) will 
get added to your internal DNS zone and can be resolved by any of the 
other clients.

The ISC packages BIND and DHCPD will handle this just fine - see www.isc.org
