1.) Edited my SMB.conf inside the /etc/samba directory - I changed the =
default workgroup name to match that of my Windows 2000 SP2 machine.
I also edited the Public share to point to /home/markdog/apps =
directory with open permissions for viewing.

2.) Manually started the SMBD and NMBD daemons- these are the copied =
lines from a terminal prompt:

[root at localhost /root]# smbd -D
smbd -D
[root at localhost /root]# nmbd -D

3.) Ran TestParm as Root with these results

[root at localhost /root]# testparm
Load smb config files from /etc/samba/smb.conf
Processing section "[homes]"
Processing section "[printers]"
Processing section "[public]"
Loaded services file OK.
Press enter to see a dump of your service definitions=20

4.) Everything seems ok so far: Then I tried running SMBSTATUS with =
these results

[root at localhost /root]# smbstatus
Couldn't open status file /var/lock/samba/STATUS..LCK

(I've read in some FAQ's that this doesn't necessarily suggest a =
problem, so....)

5.) I tried running SMBCLIENT with these results:

[root at localhost /root]# smbclient
SSL: Error error setting CA cert locations: error:00000000::lib(0) =
:func(0) :reason(0)
trying default locations.
added interface ip=3D192.168.244.151 bcast=3D192.168.244.255 =
nmask=3D255.255.255.128
Usage: smbclient service <password> [options]
Version 2.0.7

I'm at a loss for how to resolve these two errors:
 "Couldn't open status file /var/lock/samba/STATUS..LCK"
"SSL: Error error setting CA cert locations: error:00000000::lib(0) =
:func(0) :reason(0)"

I verify that SMBD and NMBD are currently running, and try browsing the =
Workgroup "MARK-HOME" (my workgroup name on both machines), and I have =
yet to see my samba Linux share from the W2K machine. PLEASE anyone =
with suggestions to help with my problem- I would really appreciate it !

thanks
mark

PS> As a side note - WHEN i do get the share happening, I don't want to =
have to manually start the daemons each time. Most of the tutorials =
i've come across talk about editing the inetd.conf file to kick off the =
daemons automatically, but i don't HAVE that file in RH 7.0 - I'm =
assuming that identd.conf may be it's Redhat counterpart?
