are being offered by the server. You can check also what shares are being
offered by the windows boxes the same way.
I wonder why the other windows machines are not showing up in network
neighborhood? Try sharing some things between windows machines. Maybe you
have something misconfigured on the windows side.
There is a script, findsmb, which comes with samba. First turn off nmbd
(killall nmbd) , and then run findsmb, to see who is on your network. You'll
have to restart nmbd.  net view from windows is said to do the same thing.

Hi,

I have a directory with content I don't want modified by a certain user
(account 'user'). I don't want the folder being on its own share (it will
confuse the guests!) - is there any way I can do it? I do want other users
to be able to change it, just not ones who log in as 'user'.

If NT is upgraded to service pack 5 or better problem #2 below goes away.
Problem #1 doesn't appear to cause any problems, but it is different then
Windows behavior.

Server_OS: HPUX
Client_OS: NT4 sp3

I have found two issues, it may be possible that ISSUE 1 is causing ISSUE 2.

ISSUE 1:
When I browse the domain from "Add Printer Wizard", it shows the following:

\\NTSERVER\PRINTER1
HPUXSERVER\\HPUXSERVER\PRINTER2

where the first one in the list is an NT print server, and the second line
is
the Samba server.  Notice the redundant server name listed before the '\\'.

ISSUE 2:
I've setup a Samba 2.2.1a server with a single print share.  Whenever I go
into
the APW, select "Network printer server" and click next, the client CPU
resources hit 100% and the APW just shows an hour glass forever.

On the Samba server I show a connection from the client using "smbstatus".
The
client has to be logged out to return it to normal opperation.  Shutting
down
Samba once it has locked up, has not effect.

If I leave Samba off, then run the APW, everything works fine on the client.
It
is able to browse the domain and install printers just fine.  When I turn
the
Samba daemon back on, and try to browse the domain from APW, the client
locks up
again.

I tried this from 3 different clients, two with SP3 and one with SP5.  The
two
SP3 clients both failed.  The SP5 client had no problems.  When I upgraded
one
of the SP3 clients to SP5, the problem went away.

I was drawing a blank on this until I realized that it is 
possible to have separate smb.conf files for different users.
See section 4.1 of the samba book that comes with the samba source.

Sorry, I didn't explain this one very well.

All regular users on our system have access to private 'home' share and a
public share. We also have a generic guest account called 'user' which only
has access to the public share that is used by operators in our call centre.

In the public share (say /home/samba/public) there is a directory
(/home/samba/public/secure_content) that I do not want the account 'user' to
be able to change the files within. I'd rather not set up a new share for
this secure content, as then people might get confused. They do need to be
able to read the files, but not modify them.

Hmm....
I think the previous two suggestion get very close to what you want, but...
Let me think.....
OK.
This may sound confusing because user in UNIX/LINUX refers to the owner of
the file, but in this case account user is a guest and shouldn't have
ownership rights in secure_content.
It sounds like your regular users are real users with names on your
system and which likely belong to group users; and, the account you call user really
comprises the great unwashed, the others or world.
If that is the case, if generic account users are not part of group
users (and you should have complete control of what account these people are
assigned when they log on), you could, in directory secure_content run:
chmod 660 *  Don't forget, samba can't override security settings on your
directories (I don't think.)
And, you may also have to run chmod 771 /home/samba/public/secure_content,
but this might require fiddling until you get it as you want (you have to be
able to execute a directory to descend into it.)
Notice I haven't mentioned passwords or security because I know vary little
about those things.
While we are talking about permissions, don't forget about chattr +i, which
also might be of use to you in some situation, if you are using linux.

I just upgraded from RH6.2 to RH7.1 and have another
Samba mystery on my hands: WHICH DIRECTORY?
You seem to have half the files in /etc, and the other
half in /etc/samba. AND your man files don't mention which
directory they run from either!!!

What am I missing? 
Which directory is the right one? What does my smbd seem to use
the smbpasswd in /etc? Can I move it to /etc/samba too?

Your man pages do not mention which directory the configurations
use. 

Please add a FILES section!!!!!

Hello again. The last time I posted here, I thought I finally made my samba server stop crashing, but I was wrong :(. I had deadtime set to 2 and I was called yesterday at 4:00 am and I saw that there were 58 connections, all listening to mp3s, or watching movies. Also, I have a dir Images where the .vcd files are located (virtual CD files. they are used for running some games without CD). The vcd file is being loaded, but not downloaded, so - the file is OPENED/LOCKED.
So, some of the smbd processed died, the average load on the machine increased deadly (from 0.2-0.3 to 50).

The kernel started writing messages like these:
Aug 26 12:04:48 smoke kernel: flushing
Aug 26 12:04:48 smoke kernel: unconstipated
Aug 26 12:04:48 smoke kernel: constipated
<repeated *many* times>

I now set the deadtime to 1 and turned oplocks off.
So *please* can you tell me how to make my smb server stop crashing :(

The samba team has no control over where files are stored and/or run
"from". This is totally up the whoever packaged samba at redhat. Don't
move the smbpasswd file 'cause it will break.

try looking in /usr/local/samba too, it's a question of looking around and
trying things out :)

Currently samba can only be PDC. BDC is not suportet jet.

It is very easy:
If you compaile samba form the source you spezify where all the samba 
files go to. If you compaile samba from the source and you don't 
spezify anything, everything goes to /usr/local/samba.

Depending on the Unix or the linux-distribution you use, 
configuration files, lock files, log files, ... have their specific 
location. This is why the samba man pages can not contain a files 
section. You have to deciede if you compaile samba your self, then 
you have the flexibility to put the stuff where you want: All in 
/usr/local/samba or to the places of your distribution.

If you use a pre-compailed package (XXX.i386.rpm) or are source 
package tailored for one distribution (xxx.src.rpm) then it is the 
one who made the package that decides about the file locations. You 
have to complain to redhat if you do not like their changes. These 
changes should be for other programms as well.

This is done. If you use plaintext passwords you can set up samba on 
a nis client in the same way as on a nis server. You will not 
realiese any differences. (At least did I not realise any thing when 
compailing form the source.) If you use encrypted password you have 
to maintain the smbpasswd file on the samba server or use securtiy = 
server / domain.
