The reg fix for win2k is the 
HKLM/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services/LanmanWorkstation/Parameters/EnablePlainTextPassword=1.
I have this set and have upgraded to SP3 and all works OK
FYI running samba 2.2.5 on Redhat 7.3
