this is the command:
shendershot at smh:~$ mount //example/example_i
2033: Connection to example failed
SMB connection failed

from /etc/fstab:
//example/example_i /example/drivei smbfs user,noauto,password=shared 0 0

nothing related to error in log.smbd or log.nmbd
nothing about samba in dmesg output
kernel is 2.4.18pre1 with smbfs as module (module is loaded)
samba version 2.2.3a from Debian Sid
relavent info from ps:
root      2508     1  0 16:18 ?        00:00:00 /usr/sbin/nmbd -D
root      2510     1  0 16:18 ?        00:00:00 /usr/sbin/smbd -D
root      2511  2508  0 16:18 ?        00:00:00 /usr/sbin/nmbd -D

This is not a new install but an upgrade (using Debian Sid). It was
working fine before last week; I would suspect the upgrade was bad
but since I can mount win9x shares on the same machine using gnomba
(a gtk samba frontend) I don't think that is the case.
