There are SMB clients for Mac, "Dave" is one of them if I remember correctly.

Your other option is Netatalk, which runs on most UNIX systems and presents
an Apple-native filesharing system for UNIX.

I've used Netatalk/Samba in concert and it seems to work pretty well.
