help can't join my w2k

We recently struggled with exactly this problem, and after several hours
figured it out. It isn't in docs, but:

On the W2k domain controller, when you add the computer account for the
SAMBA machine, you need to click the little check box that says that this is
an NT member 4.0 server. The problem, for us, was that it was failing
authentication. I think the reason was that MS has changed the machine
authentication algorithm/protocal for when W2K machines join W2K
controllers.

that I have done ... even tried with unencrypted passwords still no go
... my root is in the smbpasswd file along with the user I'm logged in
with on my w2k machine ... i've also added the machine account manually
and added that to the smbpasswd file ...
