[Samba] smbpasswd problems (2.2.2 and 2.2.3) - can't change password?

well.)

smbpasswd is refusing to change the password for one of my users.
This occurs in both 2.2.2 and 2.2.3. I have not been able to decipher
why smbpasswd fails. I have set this user's password myself, and I
cannot set it (as root) then change it (as the user), nor can the user
mount any Samba shares (password failure).

This user is the last entry in the password file:

user:ID#:passwd1:passwd2:[U          ]:LCT-3C5DB7A2:

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Debug log below.
