This should work OK. Have you tried copying a large file under Linux ?
Do you have network problems (look at netstat -i) ?
What does the Samba logfile say (usually under /var/log/log.smbd) ?

Try setting the log level to a higher value if you don't see any
messages when Samba hangs.
