Win9x clients and samba 2.2.0 (vs 2.07/2.08)

We've been working (very) hapily with samba 2.0.7 when decided to give
version 2.2.0 a try. Since then, people with Win9x are complaining about
slow performance when browsing the network neighborhood and certain (samba)
network-installed applications refused to work at all. For example, we use a
network installed version of Xwin (an X-windows client). The network drive
can be found, but starting the Xwin application brings Win9x occassionally
on its knees, requiring a reboot of Win9x. I used to have for this share:
'read only = yes', 'share modes = no' and 'locking=no' (as suggested in the
Application_Serving.txt). Setting the latter two to default values (=yes)
did not fix the problem.
We then compiled version 2.08, which made everybody happy again. Giving
2.2.0 another try caused problems again, so that we're now back to 2.0.8.
We have a pretty much vanilla-flavored configuration, using security=user
with encrypted passwords. I can't really say if the problem is specific to
Win9x (~50 PCs). We only have 1 PC using Win2000 and 1 on NT; and there was
no problem with these two machines. Help is appreciated.
