Converting passwd file to smbpasswd?

   I am wondering if there is a way to convert my users passwds from
/etc/passwd over to the smbpasswd file.  I have tride cat /etc/passwd >
mksmbpasswd.sh > /usr/local/samba/private/smbpasswd.  Howvere, this
only moved the data over.  Is there a way to get the file over and
converted so I do not have to do a smbpasswd -a for each and every
user.  TIA
