Hostname problem

Steve,
The best bet would be to get your system set up properly so that
nslookup CAN resolve your system name s098; I am not familiar with your os,
so I can't really help you with that; but by default SAMBA will attempt to
resolve the name via the lmhosts file before it tries dns/etc/host/nis, etc.
So you MIGHT be able to resolve this via an entry into your lmhosts file
(/usr/local/samba/lib/LMHOSTS). See page 224 of the "Using Samba" book by
O'Reilly at the following url, or the man pages in SWAT for detailed info:

http://us2.samba.org/samba/oreilly/using_samba/

Hope this helps,
Don

Thanx !

I've tried that (netbios name = s098) but it doesn't work... It still say
the same :(

"Get_Hostbyname: Unknown host s098"

The problem is that when I do an nslookup s098 (and not nmblookup) it cannot
find it. Probably because the real name "s098.dhcp212-119.cybercable.fr" is
too complicated. And that's why I'd like to change (like forcing samba to
use localhost or something else), but "netbios name = s098" doesn't work.

|
| Steve,
| Look at the man page for smb.conf - there is a global parameter called
| "netbios name=" that you can specify your netbios name that you want your
| samba server to be known as. Note that if this name is not the same as
your
| host name, that any clients not on the same subnet as the server will have
| to have a method of resolving this name to the ip address of your samba
| machine. This could be via lmhosts file, wins or dns server.
| Good luck,
| Don

|
| Hi,
|
|
| I just installed Samba (latest RPM for Mandrake 7.2) on my linux box.
| It was working fine until I rebooted...
| The problem is that when I start it, it says "Get_Hostbyname: Unknown host
| s098".
| s098 is my hostname, but not the full. I get this name from a DHCP server.
| The full name is s098.dhcp212-119.cybercable.fr
|
| How can I avoid Samba to use this name (and use a fixed one I could
create)
| ???
|
| thanx in advance
|
| PS: I've looked at the archives but it takes to long, there is no search
| engines :/
|
