Samba 2.0.7 (the current release version) is strongly recommended for
correct operation with W2K clients.

This version comes with a "Win2000_PlainPassword.reg" file in the docs
directory, which you can just "run" on the client machine to set the
appropriate registry key. For the record:

REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkStation\Parameters]
"EnablePlainTextPassword"=dword:00000001
