Hmmm, I think I should have provided more information here myself :-)

My clients were a mix of NT4 SP4 and SP5, the server was a stock Redhat
6.0 install with the Samba 2.0.5a tar downloaded and ./configure'd. 

smb.conf:

workgroup = NEW
security = user
encrypt passwords = yes
smbpasswd file = /usr/local/samba/private/smbpasswd

[TEST]
path = /tmp
writable = yes

Can you give reciprocal details?
