Slow reads & Fast reads

I have a user with the fol problem: Reading (ie getting a list of files
in explorer) from DIR works great but then he tries to read DIR/SUBDIR
and it is amazingly slow. Problem is repeatable on multiple
workstations. SUBDIR is a physical subdirectory of DIR (it is not a
link). Samba config has not changed recently. Any ideas?
