Network Neighbourhood

I have a (for me) strange problem with samba - bith 1.9.18x and 2.0.0. 
Everything worsk fine, except that I can't get the list of shares from in
the network neighbourhood, unless either
1) I logged onto w95 or nt with the samba username and passwords 
as I have on the linux machine

2) I already mounted a share from the server

Howevery, I can SEE all of the servers I should see

I this a m$-"feature", or am I doing something wrong?
