Hello everyone,
I am responding to my own post in an attempt to give feedback to
the community on what worked to solve the problem I was having. I got
many different emails from people, and I must say that I am sincerely
grateful to all who helped me in finding the solution. In the past, I
have read through many many Samba digests on the web looking for info on
my problem, and found the question asked, but no solution.
Here is the specific smb.conf entry that fixed my problem:
[pvcs]
path = /pvcs
public = yes
writable = no
browseable = yes
printable = no
valid users = pvcsadmin pvcsuser
force user = pvcs
force group = pvcs
write list = pvcsadmin
This fixed my problem precisely. There is a man page entry about "write
list" in the smb.conf man page, but my problem in finding it stemmed
from wanting (or thinking) to fix this problem by another means. I was
simply looking for something else. That is why this list was so helpful
in solving the problem.
One last point. This is pretty obvious to me, but we had one guy here
that didn't get this aspect of the solution, so I thought I would
mention it here. What allows the "write list" to work is the fact that
"writable" is set to "no". If you make "writable" set to "yes", then
you end up with the "write list" being redundant and useless. It is
obvious once you think about it. :-)
Again, many thanks to all that contributed from this list, and have an
excellent day!
