attempting to become domain master...

i'm trying to use samba as a domain master browser but i don't think it's
ever actually becoming the domain master.  the 'attempting to become domain
master...' in my nmbd log repeats every five minutes and there is never any
message indicating that it succeeded to become the domain master.

how should i go about investigating this (to find out why it's not becoming
domain master and who it thinks is the domain master)?
