ok, other possibilities:

- how much memory per user do you have?  should be about 600-800k. 
- are there any patches for your o/s that are known to be needed to get 
  samba to work?
- some systems can only run smbd / nmbd from inetd; others prefer smbd / 
  nmbd to be run from boot-time scripts.
