Actually Winbind is compiled by default in most platforms as you said,
but Winbind is not enabled in most of those.

I think this may be a severe limitation for a standalone or a member
server, though for DC it's reasonable, I think.

Currently if Winbind is enabled, local UNIX group membership will be
ignored. But quite a few users want to rely on this membership, I
think. Also Winbind hides informations of shell, UID and primary group
in /etc/passwd. This may also be a problem in mixed environments.

Samba is used not only as DC but also as a simple file server. So I
hope Samba 4 box will be a good simple file server as Samba 3 is.
