Not sure whether that's related but note that .local is used for MDNS
(see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zeroconf#Name_resolution). Are you
sure you switched MDNS off in your system?

Look in
/etc/nsswitch.conf

On older Linux systems adding a line with 'mdns off' to host.conf was
necessary.
