Hmm ... that was me. Since I added that code specifically for IRIX,
I'm very surprised it broke. I'm back in the office tomorrow, so I'll
take a proper look and fix it.

AFAIK, these are specific to GNU make. If we are going to use them,
configure needs to detect and enforce the use of GNU make.
