Thanks Andrew for your prompt response!

You're probably correct that an older version was running in mem. ie. the
daemons had not been restarted since upgrading. I have since restarted
them but no longer have an OS X.3 client available at the pre-january-2004
patch level. Applying these patches (software updates in Mac lingo)
caused the symptoms to go away also even, afaik, with 3.0.1 smbd.
