Samba caching directory handles? (Writes to incorrect home dir)

I don't see how, not with the description you gave. No matter what
screwey things Samba might do with fds, oplocks etc it would have to
be running as the wrong euid to get the effect you describe. That
would reqire a bug in the vuid or become_user code.

indeed, and I am *very* skeptical about the description of the
symptoms. It just doesn't make sense.
