Jeremy,

Sorry for the belated response. Your second patch seemed to
do the trick on two testbed systems (OBSD 2.8, OBSD PRE-2.8 CVS).
No hiccups at all on either. I will continue to further test it
to make sure it is fixed. Also, am I to assume that the fix is more
temporary than not? It seems that mmap against the file i/o could
turn up more problems on other platforms (such as the HPUX difficulties).
