I think we can probably drop support for systems that don't have
stdarg. We already require ansi prototypes - are there any systems out
there that we can actually compile on now that don't have stdarg? 

The only candidates I can think of is Ultrix 3.x and maybe SunOS 4
using the old sun compiler, but I don't think we build on either of
those systems anymore anyway (unless you use gcc, which is the only
sane thing to do on those systems).

any others I don't know about?
