My only addition to what has already been said is to quote the manpage:

  Leading and trailing whitespace in a parameter value is discarded.
  Internal whitespace within a parameter value is retained verbatim.

So another thing to ensure is that the whitespace exactly matches the
dirname (e.g. a single space and not a tab or multiple spaces).
