Hmm, taking another look at this i fail to see what you
describe.  Well, i do see the funky read/write logic in
report(), but this only seems to be used for the two line
stats summary (only three longints are sent), not for the
extended stats one gets with --stats (which always seems to
be output by the sender i guess).
