You'll need to check to see if the daemon is really running, and if not,
check the log file (e.g. syslog) to see why not (the above command exits
without a visible error no matter what).  You can use --no-detach during
the initial getting-it-right period to more easily tell if the daemon is
still running -- once you get it working, Ctrl-C it and run it without
the --no-detach option.
