I was using a slightly different command line. -auv

The rsync would go to completion.

-----------------

Then I would see:

building file list ... done
./
1MB/
1MB/filename.tiff
1MB/filenametoo.tiff
.....

--------------

Then it would become:

building file list ... done
./
1MB/
wrote 65307 bytes read 20 bytes 18664.86 bytes/sec
total size is 39827727372 speedup is 609667.17

---------

Followed finally by:

building file list ... done
./
wrote 65307 bytes read 20 bytes 18664.86 bytes/sec
total size is 39827727372 speedup is 609667.17

-------------

There were other directories that behaved similarly, at the same time. I
have abbreviated the above to save space.

Thanks for the very quick response.
