It is working now... thank you very much, and thanx to Michael Fischer
as well. The solution as suggested by jw schultz for the benefit of the
archives is:

bash-2.03$ rsync -auvz --rsync-path=/usr/local/bin/rsync sydney:/sun/ .
receiving file list ... done
./
JIPP-F
JIPP-G
JIPP-H
JIPP-T
PA-LOCKS
PA-LOCKS.idx
PABD-G.idx
...
