transferring individual files question, pull vs. push

Try quoting the file list like this:
rsync -e ssh source-box.xxxxx.com:'/var/qmail/control/file1 \
/var/qmail/control/file2 \
/var/qmail/control/file3 \
/var/qmail/control/file4' \
/var/qmail/control

Your shell on the remote system will split out the multiple names, but
locally it is part of the single "source" argument.
