I took this advice and now have Android 2.2 on a CD.

I note the comment in the flagged URL that says:

"I won’t suggest you to install Android on your primary harddrive, due to 
limitation of the hardware compatibility."

and believe this to be sound advice.

However, it might be worth trying to install it as the sole OS on a 
(second-hand?) netbook/notebook.  Then any self-inflicted wounds will not 
cause havoc to my routinely-used set-up.  Since there is now an 
overwhelming range of choices, I would welcome suggestions/guidance.
