CLUG Programmers' Special Interest Group Meeting - 9th July 2009
================================================================
Date: 9th July 2009 (Second Thursday of the month)
Time: 18:30 - 20:30 (you will not be able to get in after 8pm)
Speaker: Alex Satrapa
Abstract: Alex Satrapa will be making Git and Subversion work
together - somehow.
While Subversion is a popular code versioning system, it
is still a fundamentally centralised and networked
system. You can't commit your changes unless you can
contact the central server, which can be difficult when
on a plane or on holiday. In addition, you can't make
your own branch and use Subversion to maintain the
differences without basically writing a completely new
one branch the central server.
Luckily, Git was written to solve these and many other
problems. However, programmers don't always have the
luxury of converting the code repositories they use from
Subversion to Git. In these situations, Git can be made
to work with Subversion, allowing you to work on and
test multiple branches and keep track of your off-line
commits while still using Subversion to commit changes
to the master repository. Alex has had a wealth of
experience wrestling these two tools into some kind of
co-operation and will be sharing that know-how in this
talk.
Venue: Level 2, Griffin Centre, Genge St, Civic
The Griffin Centre is located near the corner of Genge Street
and Narellan Place. From the bus station, walk down Mort
Street away from London Circuit until you get to Bunda Street.
Follow this until you get to the corner of Genge Street, then
cross it and walk (left) up it. The Griffin Centre is on your
left. For those driving, there is parking nearby in Narellan
Place and under the new Canberra Centre building at quite
reasonable rates for the evening.
