Configure nptd to use a "LOCAL" clock as the authority:

> server 127.127.1.0
> fudge  127.127.1.0 stratum 5

 From memory, NTP works better if you have two or three machines  
peered together as the "authoritative" servers, with one of them  
broadcasting to the network. Each machine can keep track of the drift  
in the onboard oscillator relative to the other machines in the peer  
group.

You'll find that some motherboards have far more reliable oscillators  
than others. Poke around and see which one reports the lowest jitter  
on the "LOCAL" clock.
