The problem with it only playing in the center of the screen is that
zooming is not enabled.  If you pass -zoom on the commandline that
will scale the video to fit the window (or all the screen in
fullscreen mode).

This can be enabled by default in the /etc/meplayer.conf or
~/.mplayer/config (at least on Debian systems).
