Boris,

What I do is scan in topographic maps, then piece them together in the
GIMP. I then load them as backgrounds into gpsman, which gives me a
nice way of drawing walking routines and creating gps routes and
tracks.

I then upload the resulting walk info to http://gps.ozlabs.org/tridge/
which interacts with Google maps to allow me to see the satellite view
of the proposed walk.
