APM in 2.4.18

Hello.

I am in the process of upgrading the kernel on my laptop. One of the
motivations for this is the hope of better APM support. I have configured
and compiled the kernel and it all works fine.

Except, when I type apm at a command prompt, I get the message "APM: No
support in kernel"

I've seen stuff on the web saying this can happen if you have ACPI
enabled, but I just checked that and I don't... I definitely have APM
enabled.

Does anyone have any hints?
