Yes I can ping the server. As I mentioned above, the share is visible and
accessible from inside linux using smbclient. So the question really is, if
smbclient knows how to talk to the Win7 server and send files back and forth,
why can't cifs?

It is good to know that others have been successful. It may be a matter of some
simple setting somewhere, but at this point I have run out of suggestions.
